Linda Hurlburt

We moved to Bowen Island in the early 90's with our three teenage children. John and I grew up in Vancouver and after being away 20 years, Bowen felt like home. John was the first permanent doctor on the island from 1992- 2004. I was his office manager. It suited us perfectly and the community was so grateful for his service. We got to know so many people. That's what we love about small communities. I was president of the Bowen Island Arts Council for 4 years. During this time the Arts Council started the 'Gallery at Artisan Square' which moved to the cove recently and became The Hearth. I was also a founding member of Foxglove Fibre Arts Co op.

I have served on the board of SKY since 2022. For 3 years I was vice president under Lichen Tilley.  I became Chair of SKY at last year's AGM. I tried to serve with dedication and perseverance. I enjoy the activities we offer, especially socializing with members. I have made good friends along the way. I do believe in volunteerism and it's rewards.  As past chair I am happy to help out where needed, but am hoping to have less responsibility and more time to enjoy my growing grandchildren and my hobbies: gardening and fibre arts.

I love Bowen Island. My great-grandparents picnicked here, my grand-parents summer-ed here with their family, and bought a cabin. My mother lived in that cabin for the last 30 years of her life

One of my dreams in life was to live here and age in place with my husband Nick. We have been here full-time since 2018.

My background is within the hospitality industry in hotels. My last job prior to retirement was as Rooms Manager with Conferences and Accommodation at UBC. I worked there for 18 years. The job entailed recruitment, training, organizing and managing the Rooms Division, with a staff of up to 65 employees, liaising with other departments to implement summer housing programs. I sat on committees to improve communication between departments and solve problems. I oversaw Housekeeping, Front Desk, Reservations and Night Security staff. I arranged workshops and retreats for Staff and Management of our department. I was involved in Budget, Payroll, and Revenue Management.

SKY provides a great outlet for Seniors to interact and socialize, which are very important components as we age. This last year SKY has evolved into a place of Learning. I have immensely enjoyed attending the workshops. Learning about healthy aging has given me avenues to pursue and spark my intellect.

In applying to be a member of the Board of SKY, I am hoping to be able to contribute some of my knowledge, skill, and expertise to help support and build on SkY’s successes.  Working with SKY to achieve an environment where Seniors can learn, enjoy, and age gracefully would be a privilege.

I humbly offer my application for a position on the Board.

I've worked in finance for most of my life and so it feels quite natural to hold the current position of treasurer at SKY. I've been with SKY for four years now and have made good friends and participated in many interesting and fun events.

I've been on Bowen for nine years now, and have thoroughly embraced the island and its beauty and people. It's like one big holiday!!

In the 1990s, I was an Audiology professor at UBC. During that time, my husband and I kept our boat in the marina at Snug Cove and bought property on Cates Hill with the plan to retire on Bowen. In 2002, I started as a Psychology professor at the University of Toronto. I taught courses in Health Psychology and Adult Development and Aging. My research focuses on the links between sensory and cognitive aging. I have been the audiology expert for the Canadian Longitudinal Study of Aging and the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging. I contributed to the World Health Organization World Report on Hearing and the World Report and Aging and Health. I am a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

By the time I retired in 2020, our new house on Bowen became the perfect place to spend the pandemic! As COVID restrictions were lifted, I became an Adjunct Professor in Gerontology at SFU and a member of the Bowen Island Municipality (BIM) Accessibility Advisory Committee.

Last year, I became a member of SKY and I have served as a member of the SKY Board of Directors since May 2025. I worked on revising the SKY by-laws and on the “REACH FOR SKY” grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to mobilize knowledge about healthy aging and brain health. Currently, I am working on the “REACH FURTHER FOR SKY” grant from BIM to engage SKY members in learning about age-friendly community initiatives to promote healthy aging.

I am excited about being a SKY volunteer because it is a great opportunity to use what I have learned about health and aging to help make Bowen a more age-friendly community.

Janet Ross

I have been a resident on Bowen Island for almost 9 years, having previously lived in North Vancouver for more than 40 years. I have worked mostly in administrative/clerical positions most recently at Lions Gate Hospital, where I worked for more than 25 years.

I moved to Bowen Island after retirement in order to be closer to family who had moved here. I have been involved with Sky for more than three years and also volunteer at the Knick Knack Nook. I have also been a member of the Bowen Island Community Choir and have been on the board of directors there.

I am interested in the arts, creativity, social connection, and community cohesion.
